Tan Chau Chickens (Gà tre Tân Châu) are a famous Vietnamese bantam chicken breed primarily kept as prized ornamental pets and show birds. They originally hail from the An Giang province in southern Vietnam, specifically the mountainous region around An Giang.
- Physical Appearance:
- Compact Size: They are very small, compact bantam chickens. Adult roosters typically weigh between 700 and 800 grams (rarely up to 900 g), while hens are slightly lighter at around 600 to 700 grams.
- Magnificent Plumage: The most striking feature of the roosters is their extremely long, gracefully curved tail and saddle feathers, giving them a proud and majestic posture.
- Diverse Colors: They have evolved into around 20 different color varieties and patterns, including pure white, silver-necked, gold, and multicolored variations.
- Temperament:
- Calm and Friendly: Tan Chau chickens have a very peaceful, composed, and people-friendly disposition, making them easy to tame.
- Lively: Despite their calm nature, they are alert, agile, and enjoy roaming outdoors during the day.
- Purpose and Rearing:
- Primarily bred as ornamental and hobby birds due to their stunning beauty and elegant posture. In Vietnam, they are often the pride of poultry exhibitions and competitions.
- Although primarily ornamental, hens have a respectable laying rate for bantams, producing around 100 eggs per year.
