Dongxiang Black-Feathered Green-Egg-Laying Chicken

← Back to all breeds
The Dongxiang Black-Feathered Green-Egg-Laying Chicken (Chinese: 东乡黑羽绿壳蛋鸡) is a rare and highly prized indigenous poultry breed originating from Dongxiang County (now Dongxiang District, Fuzhou), Jiangxi Province, China. Due to its unique biological traits and exceptional nutritional value, it is listed in China’s National List of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources.
1. Appearance Characteristics ("Five Blacks and One Green")
Through long-term natural and selective breeding, the breed has developed a highly distinctive phenotype:
  • The Five Blacks: Jet-black plumage (though minor variations are occasionally present), black skin, black meat, black bones, and black internal organs. This comprehensive internal and external melanin pigmentation (Fibromelanosis) is exceptionally rare.
  • The One Green: The eggs laid feature naturally blue-green or light green shells, a result of natural pigment deposition such as biliverdin.
  • Body Structure: Medium-sized, compact, muscular, with fine yet sturdy bones. The comb and wattles are typically dark black or purple-black.
2. Nutritional and Restorative Value
  • Valuable Green Eggs: The green-shelled eggs feature a large yolk and thick, viscous albumen. Modern nutritional analyses show they are rich in essential amino acids, trace elements, and vitamins while maintaining a relatively low cholesterol level.
  • Premium Meat: The meat is fine-textured, firm, low in fat, and rich in savory flavor compounds. In traditional dietary culture, its high melanin concentration has long associated it with restorative and health-promoting properties.
3. Habits and Hardiness
  • Strong Survival Instincts: The breed retains robust wild instincts, making them agile and adept at running and high movement.
  • Adaptability and Disease Resistance: It exhibits high tolerance and resilience to rough feeding and complex climates, making it ideally suited for eco-friendly free-range and woodland farming systems.
