Taihe Silky Chicken

← Back to all breeds
The Taihe Silky Chicken (Chinese: 泰和乌鸡), also known as the Wushan Chicken or historically as an imperial court bird resembling the "White Phoenix Fairy" , is one of China's most famous and valuable traditional chicken breeds. Originating from the region at the foot of Mount Wushan in Taihe County (Jiangxi Province), this breed looks back on a history of over 2,200 years and was historically considered a precious tribute to the imperial court.
1. Core Appearance and the "Ten Outstanding Characteristics" of the Taihe Silky Chicken
The Taihe Silky Chicken differs drastically from ordinary domestic poultry. In traditional Chinese culture, its unique physical traits are concisely summarized as the "Ten Outstanding Characteristics", primarily manifested in the following four key aspects:
  • Silky Plumage (Velvety Texture): Except for the flight feathers, the entire body is covered in pure white, fluffy, and soft filamentous plumage resembling silk threads or fine down.
  • Complete Melanin Pigmentation (Black-Bone Characteristic): A high degree of melanin deposition occurs throughout the body—its skin, flesh, bones, and even internal organs are intensely black or dark blue, which is why it is also known as the "Black-Bone Chicken".
  • Unique and Delicate Head Features:
    • Comb and Crest: Roosters feature a signature mulberry-shaped, dark purple comb, while hens possess a delicate and fluffy head crest (Yingtou).
    • Facial Accents: A dense beard grows beneath the lower beak (Huxu), accompanied by striking, vibrant turquoise-green earlobes (Lüer).
  • Specialized Leg and Foot Structure (Feathered Shanks and Five Toes): The shanks are densely covered in feathers (Maojiao). Furthermore, unlike the vast majority of ordinary poultry that have four toes, each of their feet typically possesses five distinct toes (Wuzhi).
2. Temperament and Character
  • Quiet and Gentle: Taihe Silky Chickens are comparatively small and lightweight (roosters weigh approx. 1 to 1.5 kg, hens approx. 0.75 to 1 kg). They have a very calm, gentle, and shy temperament.
  • Pronounced Broodiness: The breed has retained its strong natural brooding (nesting) instinct. Hens reliably hatch their own eggs, making them perfect for natural brooding and sustainable small-scale poultry keeping.
3. Special Significance and Utilization
  • Traditional Medicinal and Nutritional Value: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and historical works such as the Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica), the Taihe Silky Chicken is highly esteemed. It is the authentic raw material for world-renowned traditional preparations (such as Wuji Baifeng Wan).
  • Nutritional Profile: Its meat is exceptionally rich in essential amino acids and trace elements. It yields a highly nutritious, delicate broth traditionally valued for strengthening and recovery.
In summary: The Taihe Silky Chicken is far more than just a rare ornamental breed—it is a fascinating combination of exotic aesthetics, a gentle temperament, and deeply rooted traditional significance that should not be missing in any enthusiast's breeding program.
